Partnering with Te Mana Theraml solutions for Geothermal Innovation

Mountain Country Technologies is excited to announce a new partnership with Te Mana Thermal Solutions, a pioneering clean-tech company based in New Zealand. Together, we are launching an innovative initiative to repurpose Alberta’s orphaned oil and gas wells into long-term sources of sustainable geothermal energy.

This collaboration brings together Mountain Country Technologies’ local expertise and regulatory experience with Te Mana’s advanced geothermal technology. At the heart of this effort is Te Mana’s proprietary well liner—made from Kevlar-reinforced vinyl ester resin—designed to endure extreme geothermal heat and resist chemical degradation. This cutting-edge solution makes it possible to safely and efficiently convert inactive wells into productive geothermal systems.

By combining international innovation with Alberta-based implementation, we're transforming environmental liabilities into clean energy assets—delivering sustainable solutions that benefit local communities and the planet.

Voisey’s Bay Mine Reclamation Project

Located approximately 35 km southwest of Nain in northern Labrador, the Voisey’s Bay Mine is one of the most significant nickel deposits ever discovered in Canada. Owned by Vale Canada, the mine began operations in 2005 and played a key role in establishing Canada as a global leader in nickel production.

In December 2024, Vale completed the Voisey’s Bay Mine Expansion Project, marking a major transition from open-pit to underground operations. The expansion includes the development of two new underground mines—Reid Brook and Eastern Deeps—which are expected to extend the life of the mine through to at least 2034.

As part of this transition, Vale Newfoundland & Labrador Ltd. has initiated a comprehensive reclamation program for the original open-pit site, known as the Ovoid deposit. Mountain Country Technologies has been contracted to assist the reclamation effort, which is focused on restoring the area’s environmental integrity and long-term sustainability.

Key components of the reclamation strategy include:

  • Backfilling:      Strategic use of waste rock and paste backfill to fill the pit, minimizing      the risk of water accumulation and improving structural stability.

  • Water      Management: Installation of advanced systems to manage precipitation,      runoff, and groundwater seepage, ensuring effective drainage and      preventing contamination.

  • Revegetation:      Reintroduction of native vegetation to promote ecological recovery and      prevent soil erosion.

  • Environmental      Monitoring: Ongoing evaluation of site conditions to track progress      and adapt practices as needed to meet environmental targets.

Mountain Country Technologies is proud to support this important environmental initiative, working alongside stakeholders to ensure a safe, stable, and sustainable future for the Voisey’s Bay site.
